When I began my journey, I used to wonder why I needed a special printing machine for sublimation? Can’t I use my regular device for printing my artwork and then transferring it to substrates? Out of curiosity I used a regular printer, and I could not get what I wanted while sublimating.
After some research I realized heat transfer printing can only be done with special printers as they use different ink and transfer paper for getting durable, high – quality prints which stand the test of time.

What is Sublimation Printing?
This process creates long lasting and vibrant designs by turning solid dye into gas under pressure and heat, allowing the ink to make bonds with the substrate. This technique is so versatile that you can bring an artistic vision to tangible items and can create unique masterpieces.
For me this technique is not just about aesthetics, but it is a sustainable option. I prefer using eco – friendly items and with no water used in this process and less waste, it aligns with the increasing demand of eco – friendly business practices.

What is a sublimation printer?
Specially designed dye – sub printers are for printing high quality artwork on transfer paper. These special machines are equipped with special print heads which use uniquely formulated ink to print special designs.
To use the printing machine, a transfer paper is loaded, and artwork is sent from the computer. This high-quality printer works by heating the special dye and turn it to the gas which then penetrates the surface of transfer paper.
What are different types of sublimation printing machines?
I always categorize these devices in three categories mentioned below.
1. Inkjet printers
These types of printing machines are use inkjet technology for printing images on the transfer paper. Then the transfer paper is pressed on the substrate like metal, ceramic or fabric under specific pressure and heat. The dye – sub ink then melts and diffuses in the substrate, making a permanent bond with the substrate.
Ideally these printers are affordable, compact, easy to set up, portal and lightweight, due to which they are best for small business or hobbyists.
Also, if you wish to produce less prints then this is a very cost-effective solution.
The only thing which I don’t like about sublimation machine is that they generally have a limited print width which ranges from 8” to 13”. But it is perfect for small apparel items, personalized gifts and promotional products.
2. Dye – sub printers
These special machine use dye – sub technology for printing images directly to the substrates. The special ink is heated and turned to gas which then diffuses to the substrate making a fade – resistant and permanent bond with the substrate.
These are big in size and can handle wider printing media, ranging from 24” to 64” in width. These big devices are best for industries like signage, print shops, textile printing and graphics production.
3. DTG (Direct-to-Garment) printers
This ideal sublimation device is designed to print on fabric. They have a special print head which moves across the fabric and deposits ink in the raster pattern. This ink is then treated with the help of heat and pressure to print the permanent designs on caps, hoodies, t-shirts and other substrates.
Advantages and disadvantages
According to my point of view, here are the advantages and disadvantages of using a dye – sub machine.
Advantages
1. The printer produces fade – resistant, high – resolution, vibrant and long – lasting prints with amazing color reproduction.
2. These are excellent for printing a huge range of materials like ceramics, polyester, metal and much more. This technique can be used on numerous applications like home decor, personalized gifts, promotional items and custom apparel.
3. These prints have amazing durability. The ink here becomes the part of substrate, instead of sitting on the surface of material, thus resulting in prints which can withstand general wear and tear, sunlight exposure and repeated wash.
4. This printing method does not leave any residue or texture on the substrate, giving a clean print.
Cons
1. Mastering a dye – sub printer may require some time. So, don’t feel bad if you are unable to print perfectly in the initial phase.
2. They have limited color range which means that they are unable to reproduce all colors which are used in the original image.
3. They need a heat press for transferring dye to the substrate. So, you need to invest in one more piece of equipment i.e. a heat press.
4. This printer needs special ink which is designed to be heat activated. This ink is more expensive than regular ink. So, you need some investment.
What is a sublimation printing machine used for?
The primary use of dye – sub printers is to print high quality designs using special ink. Sky is the limit with what you can print with this amazing machine. Here are some items which I love to sublimate most.
1. Ceramic Mugs
I love sublimating ceramic mugs with amazing patterns and images. These prints are permanent and will not fade with time, even after multiple washings. These are the best memory keepsakers.
2. Keychains
Acrylic keychains can be easily sublimated with any design or image you want. I always love to print my best moment photo on a keychain, and till now i have made a huge collection of it.
3. Phone cases
This amazing technology is also used to print beautiful phone cases. You can choose your favorite graphics, photo of your pet or an image with your partner etc. Recently I printed around 200 phone cases with custom designs for my cousin’s birthday party. And yes, making these vibrant phone cases was fun. Try it!!
4. Custom T-Shirts
Much popular substrate and my all-time favorite is sublimating t-shirts, where you can print custom designs. I like it because the designs make a permanent bond with the t-shirt fabric and will not fade over time.
How can you use a sublimation printer?
Using dye – sub printing device is not rocket science but you need to remember the steps below if you are using it for the first time.
1. Initially create an image which you wish to print on a substrate.
2. Using a graphics software, resize the image which fits to the size of material you are sublimating.
3. Next convert the image to a bitmap format. Do this by selecting image > Mode > Bitmap.
4. Now invert colors of the image by selecting Images > Adjustments > Invert.
5. The image is now ready to be printed on transfer paper.
How can you maintain your dye – sub printing machine?
If you want to give your printer an extended life then follow the steps below. I personally use these maintenance tips to increase the life of my machine. And it’s worth it!!
1. Regularly clean print heads and nozzles for preventing clogs and to get consistent and smooth ink flow.
2. Always use high quality transfer paper and ink, as low-quality supplies may damage the printer over time.
3. When your machine is not in use, store it in a cool and dry place and always cover it to protect it from debris and dust.
