Once I got the chance to do home decor reflecting the artwork of my friend. I stumbled upon the idea of canvas sublimation for decorating the walls and the results were amazing.

If you are also looking for creative ideas to elevate your craft projects or artwork then printing canvas is a wonderful way to make high – quality, stunning prints which truly pop.

Whether you want to reproduce your craft work or want to customize the home decor, this technique offers a seamless blend of professionalism and creativity.

However, printing canvas comes with some challenges. Here are tips and tricks to help you get the best results.

Can you sublimate on canvas?

Yes, sublimation on canvas is possible, but there are some key factors to follow to ensure a successful outcome. Printing canvas has opened up the opportunity to reflect digital photos on a stretched canvas with high quality.

1. The material of canvas should be of polyester. It is because polyester is the only material which can easily absorb and hold the dye – sub ink.

2. The canvas you are printing should be of white color as the printing ink tends to blend with the colored background, making it less visible.

3. The surface of the canvas should be smooth and should not have any wrinkles or bumps. Because any imperfection on the substrate will be transferred to final outcome.

What is a canvas?

It is a type of fabric which is mostly used for printing and painting. It is made from different materials like linen, cotton or synthetic fiber. It is a popular choice for printing due to its ability of ink absorption and texture. It also provides a high-quality image.

How dye – sub printing works on Canvas?

Sublimation on canvas means printing the artwork on transfer paper and then transferring it to canvas. It is the science of letting ink to turn in the gas and make bonds with canvas fabric. It results in a long-lasting, high-quality image which is resistant to cracking and fading.

The best thing about sublimating canvas is that it lets you create detailed and vibrant prints. This process is best for reproducing artwork and photographs which need high levels of detailed and color accuracy.

In addition to this, printing canvas is a long lasting and durable method, which makes it perfect for use in numerous applications like home decor and wall art.

Also to achieve the best results with canvas it is necessary to select the right type of material and pre- treat it properly. Do not forget to stretch it before printing.

Always use high quality sublimation ink and to adjust pressure and temperature settings of the heat press to make sure that the artwork is properly transferred on the substrate.

Overall, canvas printing is an effective and versatile method which allows the creation of long lasting and high-quality images. With the correct devices and techniques, it is necessary to produce vibrant and stunning prints which will surely impress you.

How to prepare canvas for sublimation?

Sublimation on canvas has become an increasingly popular technique. It generates high quality prints with amazing colors and outstanding details. But to achieve great results, it is mandatory to prepare the canvas correctly. Here are the steps to prepare the canvas for printing.

1. Selecting the right canvas

Selecting the right canvas is an important step in the preparation phase. The substrate should be made of 100% polyester to make sure that the ink can be completely penetrated in the fibers. If the canvas has the blend of cotton and polyester, then print will not be as vibrant and there is a chance of color bleeding.

Note – There are various types of canvases which are available in the market like linen, cotton and polyester. I recommend using polyester canvas as they are specially treated to accept the dye – sub ink and offer excellent color vibrancy.

2. Pre – Treating the Canvas

Once you have selected the right canvas, the next step is to pre – treat it. It includes coating the surface of substrate with sublimation coating to enhance the ink’s adhesion. Make sure to apply the coating evenly and dry it properly before printing.

Various coating options are available like roll – on, brush and spray. It is necessary to select the right coating which works best for your substrate. You can also check with the manufacturer to see if they provide pre – pre-covered canvas which will surely save you effort and time.

3. Stretching the canvas

Once your canvas is pre- treated, now you have to stretch it. Stretching ensures that it is flat and tight which is mandatory for successful transfer. There are various options to stretch a canvas like using a canvas stretching machine, pliers and stretcher bars.

Canvas stretching needs a bit of patience and practice, but it is a critical step which should never be overlooked. Note that stretching may cause the blank to shrink slightly. So, it is recommended to stretch the material a bit larger than the size you require for printing.

What are the items needed for sublimating canvas?

Before jumping to the procedure of sublimation, make sure to have the below things.

  • Printing ink
  • Sublimation printer
  • Heat press
  • Transfer paper
  • Heat resistant gloves
  • Lint roller
  • Heat resistant tape
  • Rag, scraper, water and pressing pillow
  • Heat resistant foam
  • Paper trimmer
  • Scissor
  • Clear dye sub HTV
  • Canvas fabric
  • Protective paper

Process to sublimate on canvas

To sublimate canvas you need to follow the below steps.

1. Prepare the design

Make a design as usual. But if your design includes a photo then you have to adjust the printer. The easy one is to use the paper without any frame to avoid any mistakes and get a stunning design.

2. Addition of clear dye sub HTV

For adding clear Dye Sub, use the paper trimmer for cutting the HTV as per the size of the substrate. It is trimmed for avoiding rough edges around the printed canvas. Also, use the lint roller before applying HTV to eliminate any dirt or dust on canvas.

3. Apply the print

For applying the print on canvas, first you need to cover it with sublimation paper and then secure it with heat resistant tape. Now put it in the heat press machine and then apply the heat-resistant foam and use the pressing pillow to restrict the design in a particular location.

4. Clear image quality via HTV

After printing the design, you can observe that the image and texture is much better using a clear dye – sub HTV. Also, you should use a versatile heat press to get the desired image canvas material.

5. Finishing reverse canvas

To give your printed canvas an appealing and professional look, grab a pair of scissors and start cutting the edges of images until you make them small enough to be covered by the side of the frame.(cut only when the image is spread massively out of the frame).

6. Finishing touches

When all the above steps are completed, peel the paper to get the final outcome. Initially you will find out that the design is looking bad, but when you use the water and rag to clean the remains, the design will become better than expected. Now you can frame the printed canvas using a double sided tape or hot glue.

Why should you use HTV?

HTV is used to increase the graphics quality and visuality of the design on canvas. If you do not use HTV, then the colors of the design will fade away immediately.

The only thing which you need to keep in mind before using HTV is that you have to print the design in inverted direction, else the artwork will print out in the reverse direction.

Why is this method best for printing on canvas?

As per my opinion, this technique is much preferred over other sublimation methods because this method makes the surface look glossy. Also, the materials needed for this printing are easily available, making it convenient for beginners.

Effective tips for canvas sublimation

Canvas sublimation needs careful consideration of multiple factors to generate stunning results. Here are some tips and tricks which can help you to get the best outcome while printing.

1. Using right ink

The quality of ink can create a significant difference in the final product. Choose the ink which is specially designed to infuse in the substrate, making a vibrant and permanent print which won’t crack or fade over time. It is also necessary to look for factors like durability, vibrancy, and color gamut.

2. Adjusting the pressure and temperature

The pressure and temperature settings are crucial factors in printing. The best pressure and temperature settings may vary based on the type of ink, heat press and canvas being used. It is critical to follow the manufacturer’s instruction equipment you are using.

Ideally this substrate uses a lower temperature which is usually between 375°F to 400°F and the pressure should be 35 psi to 45 psi.

Also, ensure that the pressure and temperature are evenly distributed throughout the canvas for avoiding any uneven color transfer. You can use the heat press with large platen to make sure that the canvas is pressed evenly.

3. Avoiding common mistakes

Printing canvas needs a bit of perfection to get the best outcome. Some common mistakes can affect the quality of final prints. Here are the tips to avoid them.

  • Make sure the substrate is free from any dirt and debris before printing. As any impurity can cause uneven ink transfer.
  • Never over press or overheat canvas as it can cause bleeding or blurry prints.
  • Ensure the paper is properly aligned with the blank before pressing. Misaligned paper can result in uneven transfer.
  • Never use too much ink on the substrate as it can cause color bleeding, resulting in poor quality prints.
  • Always allow the canvas to cool down before removing the paper. It will ensure the ink is completely transferred on the canvas.

Conclusion

Sublimation on canvas is a high quality and versatile method which has a huge range of applications. This method is best for adding personal touch to home. You can try it out to make stunning decors. If you have any suggestions please mention them in comments or you can message me directly.

FAQs

Q- Is canvas a polyester material?

Sublimating is generally done on polyester canvas as they have the ability to make bonds with ink. Canvas is available in different materials, but you should get a polyester canvas for best prints. If your canvas is not made of polyester, then you can also coat it with polyester material so that dye – sub ink can make a permanent bond with it.

Q- Can you sublimate on canvas made of 100% cotton?

Any substrate must have some fraction of polyester as sublimating pure cotton material is not possible. So, you need to cover 100% cotton canvas with sublimation spray which puts some amount of polymer in the substrate.

Q- What is the ideal temperature, time and pressure for canvas printing?

Always use a lower temperature which is usually between 375°F to 400°F and the pressure should be 35 psi to 45 psi, applied for 5 to 10 seconds. If you are using a low heat press setting, then you may not achieve the desired result as low temperature settings will not print the design and high temperature will ruin it.

Q- How can I prevent ghosting on sublimation prints?

For preventing ghosting in the prints, ensure to let the substrate cool before removing the paper and also avoid shifting the paper when the Canvas is still hot. It will help to ensure crisp and clean prints without ghosting.
