DTF and sublimation, both are popular printing techniques widely used to print custom designs on various substrates. Both methods are fundamentally different and have different applications.

DTF is best to print on dark & cotton fabric. It is best for materials where you are looking for a more versatile and straightforward process with flexibility to create artwork on various materials without using any special coatings.

While, sublimation is best for polyester substrate or  specially coated material. With this method you can get vibrant and long lasting designs which will not peel or fade for a long time. You can also print detailed and colorful images with this method.

Both techniques have much to offer. I have tested these methods for different projects and both have their own pros and cons. If you want to know more about these methods then follow along.

Is DTF The Same As Sublimation

What is sublimation printing?

Sublimation design transfer is a technique which let the image to print beautifully on substrate. The process is somewhat similar to DTF printing, but the difference is it is done via using sublimation printer and ink.

It also enables the artwork prepared with heat press to be printed. The technique has low cost of investment and can be used to make personalized items. You can also use this method to make promotional products.

What is DTF printing?

This printing method aslo make special designs which can be printed on various products. This method uses heat and inkjet technology. As this is a digital printing technique, the application time is very less. In its initial step it uses CMYK or RGB color model.

After that it uses a PTE film which is also known as Polyethylene terephthalate. After applying ink on PTE film, it prints the design on the film. Glue is applied during this process as it makes the print harden and adhere better on the surface. The artwork is then transferred to the product surface with the help of heat press and your print is now ready.

What is the difference in DTF and sublimation transfer?

Yes, there are some similarities in sublimation and DTF transfers but there are some differences also. The print durability and printing process are the key differences to be emphasized. Both methods use heat in design transfer process, but in DTF printing, you have to apply glue and in dye – sub the ink is stronger so they immediately make bond with the fabric.

Also, there is notable difference in the print size. DTF printing method can print up to 12 “x15” but sublimation can print up to 16 “x20. So, DTF produces much smaller print than sublimation printing. This concludes that DTF can be applied to only small projects.

Another important difference is the print texture. In DTF the ink is applied directly on the fabric which results in smooth and soft texture. It is because the ink sits well on the material’s surface. But in sublimation, the fabric makes bond with the ink (absorbs ink) and result in hard texture of the fabric. Here are the key differences in both printing methods.

AspectsSublimation PrintingDTF Printing
Speed & EfficiencyEfficient batch processing for huge volume.Suitable and fast printing method for on – demand printing.
Cost considerationsThis method is cost – efficient for high volume production. It is cost effective method for small to medium produce.
EquipmentNeed sublimation printer, ink and heat press.Need DTF printer, film sheets and heat press.

Material compatibilityPolymer coated items, mainly light color polyester.Non – textiles, polyester, cotton etc.

Does DTF last longer as compared to sublimation?

In my sublimation journey I have compared ink of both method which use unique inks. High quality and correct DTF ink is more durable than regular sublimation ink. It is also true when quality dye – sub inks are applied. Performance of printer is another factor affecting the image durability.

The longevity of DTF and sublimation prints is also dependent on the method and frequency of washing the printed clothes. Your prints will remain durable when you wash them in cold water.

Is DTF printing same as sublimation?

After going through all the above mentioned aspects, the answer is clearly no, while both printing methods allow personalized and vibrant prints but they significantly differ in their material compatibility and transfer process.

Choose right method for your project.

After understanding both methods you can easily select the right method for your project. But, just to make your work easy, here are some points

  • Project volume – DTF can be a good option for small business but dye – sub could be more efficient for large quantities, mainly on compatible polyester fabrics.
  • Design complexity – Sublimation designs shines with photorealistic designs, high – details. While DTF struggle with intricate details on few fabrics.
  • Desired fabric – If you wish to print a fabric beyond light – colored polyester, DTF is best option.

Conclusion

Both printing methods offers different benefits and cater to different project needs. I recommend experimenting both methods to find out which one best suit your project needs and creative vision. For any clarification you can comment below, or you can message me.
